But don’t know where to start.

Lots of us think about making a podcast, for lots of reasons – to share our knowledge, build a community of listeners, and promote our work or organisation.

But where do you start? And how do we avoid the pitfalls of failure – fail to plan, plan to fail, as the cliche says.

So, here’s the plan I share with my students on my Podcasting Made Easy course, which teaches you over 4 modules on how to plan, record, edit, publish, and promote your podcast, what I call my PREPP approach.

To plan your podcast, you need to do a fair bit of thinking in advance.

What’s the podcast going to be called? Has someone else got that name already? Is it an attention-grabbing title?

Very importantly, you need to know WHY you are making a podcast. Yes, you enjoy the process, you love talking to people, and you might even be a whizz at audio editing. But what problem are you solving with this podcast? Is it pure entertainment or is there an educational side?

And WHO is your audience? It doesn’t have to be millions – it can be just a few dozen very significant people who want to hear your words of wisdom or interviews with wise people.

WHAT are you going to talk about? Is it a very niche specialist audience, or a more general one?  Can you draw up a list of the first 6 people you want to interview?

HOW are you going to record it? The good news is that it has never been easier to do this – just record on Zoom and take the audio track off the recording and now you have a podcast.

Have you got your VISUALS organised? You will need these for your channel.

And oh yes, WHERE are you going to host it? Which one and why? Because there are quite a few out there by now. Including YouTube, yes YouTube has a podcast section now too.

And what’s the BUDGET? Have you put both a time budget and a financial budget aside for this? Even if you just record on Zoom and put this up on a channel for free, you will incur some expenses for this.

So lots to think about there.

I hope this has helped you get your thoughts in order.

We have a Podcasting Made Easy course run over 2 x 3-hour live online Zoom sessions, with practical exercises – by the end of our course, you will have made a short podcast, edited and uploaded it to your channel of choice.
